Is it your first time traveling in guatemala and you do not speak spanish? no problem

antigua-firsttime

Is it your first time traveling through Guatemala and you do not understand Spanish? Don’t worry. We are going to show you some common words, but first of all, it is important to talk about the Guatemalans. We Guatemalans are simple people, but with a big heart and we really appreciate it when visitors from any part of the world communicate with us, although basically, in Spanish. Don’t be surprised, when walking through the streets, if people greet you with a simple “good morning, good afternoon or good night”. That is why it is important, before visiting our country, to learn some of the following words:

TO GREET AT HOME OR WHEN YOU ARRIVE SOMEWHERE

Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches
(Good morning, good afternoon or good evening/night)

Hola, buenos días. ¿Cómo estás?
Hi, good morning. How are you?

Undoubtedly one of the funniest phrases due to its meaning and the controversy about when to use it and when not, is “BUEN PROVECHO” (bon appetit). However, if you use this phrase during your stay in a Guatemalan family or in a restaurant, everyone will know that you understand and share the Guatemalan culture. And by the way, it is also used in several countries in Latin America. In fact, it is widely used, but informally.

Buen provecho (Enjoy your meal/ bon appetit)If you do not want to say “buen provecho”, you can also use other alternatives like:

Que disfruten la comida (Enjoy your meal)

Que disfruten el desayuno (Enjoy your breakfast)

Que disfruten el almuerzo (Enjoy your lunch)

Que disfruten la cena (Enjoy your dinner)

Que les caiga bien la comida. (Have a good meal)

Que les aproveche (Have a good meal)

Various phrases:

¿Disculpa hablas inglés? Excuse me, do you speak English?

¿Disculpa me puedes ayudar? Excuse me, can you help me.

¿Tienes un teléfono? Do you have a phone?

¿Puedo hacer una llamada? Can I make a call?

¿Dónde está el banco? Where is the bank?

Quiero cambiar dólares. I want to change dollars.

¡Una cerveza, por favor! A beer, please!

Tengo hambre ¿el menú por favor? I’m hungry, can I have the menu please?

La cuenta, gracias The bill, thanks.

Necesito un hotel I need a hotel.

¿A qué hora es el desayuno? At what time is breakfast served?

¿A qué hora es el almuerzo? At what time is lunch served?

¿A qué hora es la cena? At what time is dinner served?

No entiendo. I do not understand.

¿Puedes hablar más despacio? Can you talk slower?

Repite por favor Please repeat.

Necesito su ayuda I need your help.

Estoy perdido I’m lost.

Well, for now, welcome to the world of Spanish and be sure to look out for our next topic. Goodbye and see you soon.
