ICONIC VILLAGES AROUND ANTIGUA GUATEMALA

Today we are going to talk about some of the iconic villages that are close to the city of Antigua Guatemala, among them San Juan del Obispo, San Pedro las Huertas, San Felipe de Jesus, among others. Each one with its different attractions, but we are going to talk about San Juan del Obispo which, by the way, is one of the guided tours offered by the Mundo Spanish School.

SAN JUAN DEL OBISPO

Village founded by the First Bishop of Guatemala Francisco Marroquin in 1547, only 4 km. From Antigua Guatemala right at the foothill of the Agua volcano. This town is recognized for having great artisans in several areas such as carpentry, blacksmithing, pottery and chocolate factory’s among others, likewise San Juan del Obispo is famous for the production of Níspero.

WHAT TO DO AND VISIT IN SAN JUAN DEL OBISPO:

One of the must-sees is “The Museum of the Archbishop’s House” Currently it is a retreat house of the Belemnites nuns and who are in turn responsible for giving the tour in the museum. In where you can see: sculptures, paintings and colonial vestiges, 20th century furniture, Handicrafts of the 21st century, a permanent exhibition of Golden Images photographic collection, among many other things. This archiepiscopal house has a Renaissance style architecture that still stands since its construction.

MAIN SQUARE:

In the main square, you can see a beautiful church as a complement to the archbishop’s house and as an inspiring frame the majestic Agua volcano from where you can see the city of Antigua.

CHOCOLATE FACTORIES:

San Juan del bishop has several craft chocolate factories, where you can see how to prepare the famous chocolate tablet, as well as make a chocolate bar and learn more about these rich products

FACTORIES OF PYROTECHNICS:

San Juan del Obispo is also known for having good quality pyrotechnic products, in the town you can visit the factory to learn more about this craft of the place.

NATURAL PRODUCTS:

Due to the climatic and earth conditions, in San Juan del Obispo the cultivation of different are cultivated, over time, however, the most outstanding one is the medlar, to such an extent that the village is known popularly as The Land of the Medlar. This characteristic made the inhabitants take advantage of the abundance of the fruit until it became the main economic source, thus the artisans began to emerge, who devised different products made with medlar, among them wines and jellies.

Hoy vamos a hablar de algunos de los pueblos icónicos que están cerca de a la ciudad de Antigua Guatemala, dentro de ellos destacan San Juan del Obispo, San Pedro las Huertas, San Felipe de Jesús, entre otros. Cada uno con sus distintas atracciones, pero vamos a hablar de San Juan del Obispo que por cierto es una de las visitas guiadas ofrecidas por la academia de español “Mundo”,

SAN JUAN DEL OBISPO

Pueblo fundado por el Primer Obispo de Guatemala Francisco Marroquín en 1547, tan solo a 4 km. De Antigua Guatemala justo al pie del volcán de Agua. Este pueblo es reconocido por tener grandes artesanos en varias áreas como carpintería, herrería, alfarería y chocolatería entre otros, así mismo San Juan del Obispo es famosos por su producción de Níspero.

QUE HACER Y VISISTAR EN SAN JUAN DEL OBISPO:

Una de las visitas obligadas es “El museo de la casa Arzobispal” El cual en la actualidad es una casa de retiro de las monjas Betlemitas y que a su vez son las encargadas de dar el tour en el museo, en el que se puede apreciar: esculturas, pinturas y vestigios coloniales, mobiliario del siglo XX, Artesanías del siglo XXI, una exposición permanente de Colección fotográfica Imágenes de Oro, entre otras muchas cosas. Esta casa arzobispal tiene una arquitectura estilo renacentista que sigue en pie desde su construcción.

PLAZA PRINCIPAL:

En la plaza principal se puede ver una bella iglesia como complemento a la casa arzobispal y como marco inspirador el majestuoso volcán de Agua desde donde se puede ver la ciudad de Antigua.

FÁBRICAS DE CHOCOLATE:

San Juan del obispo tiene varias fábricas de chocolate artesanal, en donde se puede ver cómo preparar el famoso chocolate de tableta, así como hacer una tableta de chocolate y conocer más de este rico productos

FÁBRICAS DE PIROTECNIA

San Juan del Obispo también es conocida por tener productos pirotécnicos de buena calidad, en este pueblo se puede visitar la fábrica para conocer más de esta artesanía del lugar.

PRODUCTOS NATURALES:

Debido a las condiciones climáticas y de la tierra, en San Juan del Obispo se fue dando con el tiempo el cultivo de diversos frutos, sin embargo, el que más se ha destacado es el níspero, a tal grado que a la aldea se le conoce popularmente como La Tierra del Níspero. Esa característica hizo que los habitantes aprovecharan la abundancia del fruto hasta convertirla en la principal fuente económica, así empezaron a surgir los artesanos, quienes idearon distintos productos hechos a base de níspero, entre ellos vinos y jaleas.
