RELIGIOUS SYNCRETISM

Today we want to share with you some of the religious syncretism that is part of the Guatemalan culture and you will wonder what syncretism is, well, syncretism is nothing more than the fusion of two religions since syncretism is a spontaneous process, because of the exchange of very different cultures. As is the case of the Catholic religion and the Mayan religion, so today we share with you the story of Maximón in the Tz’utujil language is called “Ri Laj mam” which means “the great grandfather” that for some is a deity and for others, is devil.

On the shores of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, is a community called Santiago Atitlan Mayan community Tz’utujil (zutuhil or zutujil) in this community is worshiped a character who is revered as “guardian protector” of the people Tz ‘utujil, given its status as a colonized people. Popular tradition refers that this character is a tz’atel tree (T’zité) or palo de Pito —Erythrina corallodendron—. That is why the ancient nahual sculptors carved its trunk and made the body and face of that character. And he is dressed in many handkerchiefs of different colors. He has a hat and has a tobacco cigar in his mouth. The Great Grandfather eventually became considered an ancestral deity, because he is believed to have the power to mediate between the earthly and the divine.

In Santiago Atitlán it is believed that the main power of Maximón is that of healing, however, it also has other faculties such as attracting people’s love, protecting against danger, being successful in business, among others.

When people come to the figure of Maximón, they offer various offers to guarantee the fulfillment of their requests among these offerings: money, liquor, candles, tobacco and food. The deity of Maximón is constituted by the duality of good and evil, so that those who venerate him, adore him and fear him at the same time.

Some facts

  • Those who venerate Maximón believe that he has the faculties to know the past, see the present and predict the future because he has knowledge of the worldview, spirituality, culture and energy that govern human beings and the universe.
  • In the oral tradition, it is stated that after Maximón gave his knowledge to the population, he went to a mountain, burned pom, (incense type) made ceremonial invocations, took fermented honey and faded into timelessness. He did not die like ordinary beings, but spread out in space and time.

SINCRETISMO RELIGIOSO

Hoy queremos compartir con ustedes algo del sincretismo religioso que es parte de la cultura guatemalteca y te preguntarás que es eso de sincretismo, pues bien, el sincretismo no es más que la fusión de dos religiones ya que sincretismo es un proceso, espontaneo, como consecuencia del intercambio de culturas totalmente diferentes.   Como es el caso de la religión católica y la maya por eso hoy compartimos contigo la historia de Maximón que en lengua Tz’utujil se llama “Ri Laj mam” que quiere decir “el gran abuelo” para algunos una deidad y para otros, diablo.

A las orillas de uno de los lagos más lindos del mundo se encuentra una comunidad llamada Santiago Atitlán comunidad maya Tz’utujil (zutuhil o zutujil) en esta comunidad se le rinde culto a un personaje que es venerado como “guardián protector” del pueblo tz’utujil dada su condición de pueblo colonizado.  La tradición popular refiere que este personaje es un árbol de tz’atel (T’zité) o palo de Pito. s por ello que los escultores nahuales antiguos tallaron su tronco y fabricaron el cuerpo y el rostro de dicho personaje.y está vestido con muchos pañuelos de diferentes colores tiene un sombrero y en la boca tiene un puro de tabaco. El Gran Abuelo con el tiempo pasó a considerarse como una divinidad ancestral, debido a que se cree que tiene el poder de intermediar entre lo terrenal y lo divino.

En Santiago Atitlán se cree que el principal poder de Maximón es el de la curación, sin embargo, también tiene otras facultades como atraer el amor de las personas, proteger contra el peligro, tener éxito en los negocios, entre otras.

Cuando las personas acuden a la figura de Maximón, brindan diversas ofrendas para garantizar la realización de sus peticiones entre dichas ofrendas se encuentra dinero, licor, veladoras, tabaco y comida.

La deidad de Maximón está constituida por la dualidad del bien y el mal, por lo que quienes lo veneran, lo adoran y le temen al mismo tiempo.

Datos curiosos

  • Quienes veneran a Maximón creen que este tiene las facultades de conocer el pasado, ver el presente y predecir el futuro debido a que posee conocimientos de la cosmovisión, la espiritualidad, la cultura y la energía que rigen a los seres humanos y al universo.
  • En la tradición oral se afirma que luego de que Maximón brindó sus conocimientos a la población, se marchó hacia una montaña, quemó pom, (tipo de incienso) hizo invocaciones ceremoniales, tomó miel fermentada y se desvaneció en la atemporalidad. No murió como los seres comunes, sino que se diseminó en el espacio y el tiempo.
