In all parts of the world there are beauty contests that culminate with the election of “Miss Universe”, and in Guatemala is not the exception because this type of contests already exists, but highlights the election of the indigenous queen “Rabín Ajaw” which means ” Daughter of the King “in Q’ueqchi’ language.

“RAB’IN AJAW”

The festival and the election originates from the first fair of Cobán, Alta Verapaz in northern Guatemala about 200 kilometers from Guatemala City in the year 1936. However, it was not until 1971 that the contest was renamed National Indigenous Queen “Rab’in Ajaw” or “Rabín Ajaw”. The vice president of those years gave a silver crown, ornamented with jade and quetzal tails and that tradition it follows until now. Everything starts in the respective indigenous communities to reach the Rabín Ajaw contest in the month of July of each year. within the main requirements is that the participants must be between 15 and 24 years old, single, be able to read and write both in your mother tongue as in Spanish, fully know their community and costume they use; be of indigenous Guatemalan parents.

In the year 2017-2018 the Representative of Quetzaltenango was chosen, here part of her biography: Lesly Marisol López Cabrera, 20 years old is a bilingual secretary, speaks three languages: Mam, Spanish and English.

In the 49th edition of the National Folk Festival, 120 candidates from 18 departments that sought the crown participated. The new queen indicated to be “happy” with this new national scepter, she hopes to work in favor of the women, and midwives because she knows “the pain that happen to take care of other women to take care of their health”

Hoy queremos presentar un cuadro multicolor de toda esa gama que conforma La Guatemala multicultural, plurilingüe y multiétnica que queremos mostrar al mundo. En todas partes del mundo hay certámenes de belleza y que culminan con la elección de “Miss Universo”, y en Guatemala no es la excepción ya existe este tipo de concursos, pero destaca la elección de la reina indígena “Rabín Ajaw” que significa “Hija del Rey” en idioma q’ueqchi’.

El festival y la elección se origina desde la primera feria de Cobán, Alta Verapaz en el norte de Guatemala a unos 200 kilómetros de la ciudad de Guatemala en el año de 1936. Pero fue hasta el 1971 en que el certamen pasó a llamarse: Reina Indígena Nacional “Rab’in Ajaw” o “Rabín Ajaw”. El vicepresidente de esos años regaló una corona de plata, jade y colas de quetzal y esa tradición se sigue hasta ahora. Todo da inicio en las respectivas comunidades indígenas para llegar al certamen de Rabín Ajaw en el mes de julio de cada año, dentro de los requisitos principales es que debe tener entre 15 y 24 años de edad, soltera, saber leer y escribir tanto en su idioma materno como en español, conocer plenamente su comunidad y traje que utilizan; ser de padres guatemaltecos indígenas.

La nueva reina indicó estar “contenta” con este nuevo cetro nacional y espera trabajar en favor de las mujeres y comadronas porque conoce “las penas que pasan para atender a otras mujeres para hacerse cargo de su salud”
En su mensaje de agradecimiento, la nueva Rabin Ajaw, dijo: “Voy a seguir siendo la misma niña sonriente que se atravesó en este momento de sus vidas. Vamos a trabajar juntas por los derechos de la mujer, y en especial los derechos de las comadronas y el medio ambiente, todas somos reinas y tenemos las mismas potencias”.
